The Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the selection of Mr. Alvin Childs, Jr. as the 2013 Business Leader of the Year. “It is our privilege to name such an outstanding individual such as Alvin Childs to our list of Business Leader of Year,” said Senior Council Chairman Eric Barkley, “he has maintained a long-standing history of community involvement and continues to advocate for our area.”

The announcement was made at the Chamber’s regular session board meeting held Dec. 18.

“This honor came as a total surprise to me as I don’t see myself as having spent much time in the limelight during the past 20 years,” Childs said.

“Frankly, it is very humbling and a little embarrassing to receive this recognition as I don’t have a self-image of myself in the same company as the previous recipients. Having said that, I am without question very proud to receive this honor and I hope my selection sends a message to anyone who has ever faced difficulties in their business or personal life that recovery, in every sense of the word, is possible.”

Childs said he wants this title to bring pride to his partners at Vintage.

“To the extent this award is given for success in business, [my partners, coworkers and our investors] had a lot more to do with [the title] than I did,” Childs said. “Also, it would be my hope that this honor reaffirms our company’s core values that place our clients’ interests first. That may sound corny or old-fashioned, but these values are not always what one encounters in the business world. Doing the right thing has and continues to be our company’s guiding principle. I firmly believe that these principles are materially responsible for our success in attracting and building a great group of dedicated employees and long-term investors.”

Vintage Realty, awarded a Business of the Year title in September of 2013, is a full-service commercial real estate provider, handling everything from land and property development to industrial and office space brokerage and leasing, as well as multi-family property management and more. They offer a multi-talented team approach built on relationships of trust and confidence to meet a client’s objectives.

Co-owners Childs and David Alexander have been in the business for 36 and 30 years, respectively. Childs developed the Shoppes at Bellemead, the region’s only lifestyle retail center; while Alexander co-developed Provenance, North Louisiana’s only traditional neighborhood development. Vintage Realty celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2013, and the company has grown to 150 employees throughout Louisiana and Arkansas.

“If this success was a material factor in the decision to award the Business Leader of the Year to me, I need to make clear that it would be inaccurate to say that I played a major role in achieving these accomplishments,” Childs said. “The truth is, I have been semi-retired for the past several years, and our company’s success both in 2013 and for the past few years has been under the leadership of my partner, David Alexander.”

Vintage Realty’s is experiencing large growth in multi-family unit development lately. They currently have about $250 million in 2,500 multifamily units from Little Rock, Ark., to Lake Charles and are in the process of building more in locally as well as throughout the state.
